One from the Master of Horror

Carrie
Image from Amazon.com
R, 1976

A dark foreboding leads to horrible tragedy. This film will really make you think and creep you out. A very sad and startling story. Flawless acting and the perfect horror story makes this one of the most horrible movies of all time, in the best sense of the word.
I highly recommend to all horror fans, and especially to those who've liked another of Stephen King's films. This is by far the best horror film I've ever seen with his name on it. This is the reason Stephen King is called the master of horror. This is a magnificent masterpiece.

I suggest this for only adults, as there are fully naked girls in the second scene. Also, blood and horror that children need not witness.

One for Family Night

The Neverending Story
PG, 1984

My short and sweet review:
This movie is a classic. A great film with a wonderful storyline and characters. If you're looking for an epic adventure, this is perfect. I highly recommend for any family night.

My very short synopsis:
A book-loving boy, while running from a few bullies, stumbles into an old book store, where he finds a book that he can really escape into.

The Amazon blurb:
"A boy discovers a book that transports him to a fantasy world whose edges reach back into his (own) mundane existence..."

Where you can get it:
I got lucky and found it on VHS at a half-price book store in Columbus for 50 cents, never opened and the faded original purchase sticker still on the unbroken plastic. It's on DVD and Blue-ray and available via Amazon, and it's also on Amazon instant video here for only $1.99 (for 48-hour rental).

Have you already seen it? Let me know what you think in the comments below!

This movie is rated PG for a little bit of blood. Also, death happens to a few. Just fyi, for those of you who are overprotective of your kids.

One for the Gods

Cabin in the Woods

R, 2012

I didn't have very high expectations of this movie, I must admit, but it totally surprised me. Right after watching, I thought, "Wow!" and listened to the music that played during the credits. It's a more sinister Hunger Games. It's horrible right up until the end, when it starts to make sense and ends up... well, no spoilers here. If you like gory horror movies with a little bit of mythology thrown in, this is a five-star movie that you'll love.

This movie is not for children, thus the R rating.

One for Girls

Coyote Ugly

PG13, 2000

I've seen this movie countless times and own it on dvd. Most movies after a few watches gets old, but this one doesn't. It's great. A classic. I highly recommend for anyone who likes music, dance, or just good movies about rising from the dust and overcoming obstacles. A five star movie all around.

I don't suggest this movie for anyone under the age of fourteen due to a sensual scene and those of dancing on a bar. There are also other elements to consider.

A Tragic Story for Adults

Image via Amazon.com.

Legends of the Fall

R, 1994

This was a great movie. Though it's more than two hours, it didn't really feel like it. I did know it was from a book without looking, just because how the story's told and everything. Brad Pitt is a tragic hero in this film, and he's a good one. Definitely worth watching at least once. I recommend for anyone who's old enough to appreciate the adult content and who enjoys a good story, with its ups and downs. This one's going on my shelf.

This movie is rated R for multiple reasons. I do not suggest for anyone less than the age of eighteen. Make sure you watch this before even thinking about letting your kids.

One for the Women of History

The Duchess

PG-13, 2008

This movie wasn't the most interesting movie I have ever seen, but it was very well done and worth the time to watch. The acting, costumes, story line and everything was great. I just felt trapped with the main character and wish there would have been some way to live happily then. I think that was one of the points of the movie, to show how women used to be treated. I highly recommend this movie to any who like historical dramas and women's issues in society.

I wouldn't suggest this movie for anyone less than the age of 15, due to the mild sex scene between the Duchess and her out-of-wedlock lover. I don't consider this movie for immature audiences, due to the lack of interest I believe they would have for it.

The Amityvlle Horror

R, 2005

Personally, I thought this movie was very well done and enjoyed it. I recommend this film to anyone who enjoys good movies, specifically ones that are a little scary.

Concerning content and why this movie is rated R: the f-word is spoken multiple times and there is a mild sex scene.

Dangerous Beauty

R,1998

I loved this movie. Great for romantics, though one has to keep an open mind concerning societal values. Love condemns and conquers. A story of tragedy and triumph. I recommend for anyone over the age of eighteen, or otherwise old enough to appreciate a movie with adult content.

The Painted Veil

PG13, 2006

I loved this movie. Great for anyone who understands compromise and doing what one has to do. Sometimes love comes after you're married, and this movie portrays this greatly. I recommend.

I disagree with the rating, though. I think this movie should probably be rated R due to adult content: Norton's buttocks and a few mild sex scenes, to be frank.

A Good Movie from a Book

Image via Amazon.com.

Contact

PG, 1997

I haven't read the book, but the movie was really easy to follow and quite interesting. Really worth the time and money, I feel. I also think it backs up some theories and ideas I have for my "Aliens" book, which I haven't started writing yet but have growing inside my head.

All Good Things

R, 2010

I don't really know what to say. I need closure and I have my suspicions. This movie angered me a little, saddened me a little, and even scared me a little, but I was interested until the end.

Swordfish

R, 2001

I watched this movie because I tend to like Hugh Jackman's movies, but was a little disappointed. It was an okay movie, I guess, but there are many that are much better.

One for Laughs

Beavis and Butthead Do America

PG13, 1996

This cartoon is for people who enjoy laughing at stupid people. If you cannot find stupid people funny, this movie is a waste of time for you. I don't like cartoons, but I laughed my butt off a few times during this movie, just because the characters are so dumb. And this is definitely not for kids - I think it probably should be rated R.

A Classic

King Kong

King Kong - Extended Cut (Three-Disc Deluxe Edition)
Image via Amazon.com.
PG13, 2006

Quite a long movie, but what a thrill to watch! I expected a movie about a giant ape, because I knew virtually nothing about this movie, and got a film concerning the tyranny of the real world with dinosaurs, humungous bees, and other huge special effects. I loved it not only for its superficial superiority as a movie, but also for all the implications concerning beastliness and beauty, psychology and tyranny, and the world we really live in. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who has the time to watch it.

R, 2007

I really liked it. Action packed and full of American justice. A movie well done. My husband advised me against watching it because he's not really into action movies like this one, but I'm glad I did. Definitely worth the time.

Snow White and the Huntsman
Image via amazon.com.

 PG13, 2012

In the beginning, I was thinking, "This movie could have a better (musical) score," but in the end I was not disappointed. Great movie if you're interested in the evolution and telling of fairy tales or if you just want to spend a couple hours in enchantment. The ending left me in awe, wanting more but knowing that having it would ruin the effect. I just sat there watching and thinking about the movie afterward. Just wow. I highly recommend.
